I would like to purpose that classical composers such as Beethoven and Mozart were not looking for the sound they accomplished. I believe what they truly desired was simple hard core rock!
My theory came to be, the other day, in humanities class, when the professor had us listen to some classical music. I began to notice the difference and similarities between rock and these compositions.
I noticed that most of the compositions were 4/4 timing and that they all seemed to have a pretty full sound. I also noticed that when they didn't have a full sound they had a very distinct melody. And the melody was usually carried by on type of instrument. All of these features seem to correspond with modern rock.
My theory: The classical composers craved the full sound that rock provides. However, due to the lack of electricity and insufficient amplification the desired sound could not be produced. To compensate for the lack of amplitude and bass-driven sound, the classical composers added sufficient instrumentation to hold rhythm and short melodies played by distinct instruments to accomplish the sound of an electric guitar.
The innate desire to rock is evident across mankind. From the simple desire to express one's self, to the extreme abuse of violence, the concept of rock has always been desired. I am simply glad to live in an era capable of producing quality satisfaction of the internal desire to live, rock & roll.
